About Rowell

rowell2“I’m in the business of storytelling”

I remember the very first time I picked up a camera. My father was right behind me as I looked into a brown bag, I reached in and pulled out an automatic SLR. It was big, bulky and heavy but gave me this WOW factor. My fascination with photography grew from that moment on.

For a while I had an obsession with my new camera.. I would go out and find anything interesting, hold the camera to my eye and take a picture.

My fascination with photography would soon lessen until my high school years.

I regret not taking photography class in high school. Secretly, I wanted to be in it but my counselors urged me to take other classes. I’m not sure how I developed my renewed interest in photography but I saved my lunch money to buy a Pentax K1000. It was brand new territory for me! A fully manual camera where I had to insert the film, wind it, expose it focus and shoot. It was really daunting at first but I got the hang of it. Today I still use that camera. I hold on to it because it reminds me of my passion for photography.

Today I shoot mostly digital. I still use film at some events and I anticipate on using it much much more. I have nothing against digital photography but the look and feel of film is amazing. So don’t be surprised if you see me with my Pentax K1000
So why photography? It’s not just a passion or a job or something to spend my time doing. It’s my lifestyle. Just the thought of running images through my mind and portraying them in visual images is exhilarating for me.

My style as a wedding photographer is not simply shooting images and handing over a dvd. I help enhance the experience of the best day of your life. I get excited about making creative imagery to tell a story of two people.

I shoot for the moments in between the moments. The time where you are most vulnerable, where you show your true emotion and engage in real expressions. I see it in the eyes. I don’t hide myself behind my camera. You’ll often see me poking my head out, smiling, laughing and interacting to help bring out the best in you..

My vision is often times influenced by every day things, encounters and observances. I get inspired by movies such as 500 Days of Summer, Oceans 11 and Up.I come up with an idea for a shot wherever I am. I carry an iPhone so I can make note of new ideas that come to mind as I am out and about.

Some of the photographers that have inspired me and helped develop my vision are Dan Winters, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Ansel Adams and many more..

Apart from wedding photography I do enjoy pursuing my own personal photography. I don’t mind taking out the film camera, hitting the streets and capturing the city. I enjoy shooting landscapes, my friends and my family. I believe that shooting for yourself is important. It’s gratifying and self-healing. It’s my passion.
